To mark the hundredth release on Tough Love, we decided to ‘gift’ the TLV100
catalogue number to Glaswegian-based designer and Good Press gallery owner, Matthew
Walkerdine.
Given the one hundred releases span a 12 year period, the only consistent thread has
been the interests of the person who runs the label, for better or worse. To reflect
this, Walkerdine took the title Private Index as a banner under which a series of
multi-format items could exist - print, sound, textile and type - each with their own
unique catalogue number. Like a conventional index, the concept is for Private Index
to somehow function as sign or measure of the label. We’ll let you decide just how
they do that.
The six items listed below are just the first six items in the series - the intention
is to keep adding to the project over time. In keeping with the bloody-minded indie
spirit of the project, these will be released on 1st April at the Independent Label
Market in London, after which they will then be available online in limited capacity.
In the meantime, don’t do anything important with anybody else.

he four original members of Lod formed after graduating school in Copenhagen, inspired
by the post-punk that was prominent in the fervent, close-knit music community of the
city. The first version of Lod was very much birthed in this same shadow: loud and
heavy. The recording of Folder began in October 2016 with engineer Julius Pedersen,
who helped the band shape tracks that had taken more than six months to write. The
result is a 24-minute, four song debut EP sung in Danish.

Display Homes are an Australian three-piece pop band that formed one night in late
2016 at a pool table in Marrickville - Greg and Darrell met Steph, who’d just come
back to Sydney from Germany and reckoned she could play drums. Their first practice
involved an abysmal attempt at a cover of Thin Lizzy’s “Dancin in the Moonlight’”,
and they soon realised Steph clearly hadn’t been in a band before and Greg shouldn’t
sing. Regardless, the connection between them all was obvious, and the songs began
to crop up naturally.
Just a few months after their first trip to the studio, Display Homes’ self-titled
debut 7" is being released through London-based record label Tough Love Records on
22nd September.

On 27th October, Tough Love will release the debut record by Melbourne-based 'super
-group' The Stroppies. Previously only available on (long-since sold out) cassette
tape via Hobbies Galore, the label run by Alex Macfarlane of Twerps fame, Tough Love
will be committing the recordings to vinyl for the first time and making the songs
more widely available via digital platforms.
The Stroppies is composed of members of many Melbourne and UK bands (Claudia is
originally from London) including Dick Diver, Primetime, Possible Humans, White
Walls, Boomgates, The Stevens, See/Saw to name a few. They make modest, idiosyncratic
pop songs that reward with repeated listening.

London trio Value Void are an offbeat proposition. A sui generis bolt from nowhere,
their debut album Sentimental (due out in October on Tough Love) is a collection of
luxuriantly deep, shag pile-warm, analogue proto-punk. Paz Maddio and Marta Zabala
grew up with each other in Azul, a small town south of Buenos Aires, where the seeds
of this project were sown. They collaborate in the same way that Elton John and Bernie
Taupin wrote songs, with Marta penning lyrics then taking them to Paz to spin them in
to music.
Marta first came to London on tour with the super-slanted art punks Los Cripis, where
she met Luke Tristram (of Cop, Score and Owner) who released their record via his
Unwork label. Paz followed to join them and scrape rent from the city's bars and cafes.

It's a strange name for a band isn't it Peel Dream Magazine. John Peel maybe? The
stuff they make possibly would have fitted neatly onto a John Peel playlist back in
the day comprising of economical indie rock that recalls Unrest, Stereolab and Yo la
Tengo. What we are talking is repetitive kraut-pop with a rather high brow Brechtian

The Stroppies are another pop band from Australia who play easy to love guitar music
with the haphazard feel of a lot of their forbearers. The band initially started as
the duo of Angus Lord and Claudia Serfaty with the premise being to get their musical
ideas down as fast as possible and even though they've expanded into a full band there
is still an urgency and freshness about their lo-fi pop which recalls the more melodic
end of the Flying Nun roster.

Moral Panics is the new EP by Peel Dream Machine AKA Joe Stevens. It is made up
from tracks recorded during the sessions for his last album Agitprop Alterna that
didn’t quite fit the vibe but were too good to be left in the can. The title for
the EP is taken from Stanley Cohen’s book about ‘60s mods called Folk Devils and
Moral Panics. Soundwise is reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and Eric Matthews.

"Great Spans Of Muddy Time" is the fourth studio album from Mercury Prize-nominated,
electronic influenced art-pop songwriter William Doyle (formerly known as East India
Youth). In contrast to the painstaking perfectionism that went into 2019’s ‘Your
Wildnerness Revisited’, a catastrophic hard-drive failure meant the tracks here are
released without the “ceaseless tinkering” (in Doyle’s words) that might have kept
it under wraps for much longer. There’s a rawness present that represents a new

Star Party began in March 2020 as a Seattle living room project between Carolyn
Brennan and Ian Corrigan (Gen Pop, Vexx) - both sharing a love of high energy
rock n roll music. The idea to start a band percolated during trips to the high
deserts of eastern Washington to pick sage and see the sun as a brief reprieve
from the misty and grey Pacific Northwestern Spring. A few months later, Star
Party released Demo 2020 on Feel It Records, featuring two originals and covers
of The Shop Assistants' "Something to Do" and the classic "All I Really Wanna Do"
(in the vein of Cher's version). Over the course of 2021, Star Party wrote and
recorded their debut LP, Meadow Flower, wherever and whenever they could. Employing
like-minded Feel It label mate Caufield Schnug of Sweeping Promises (who also
moonlights as one part of Melody Men Mastering) to mix and master the album,
Meadow Flower follows a direct line from where Demo 2020 left off. Brennan's soft
and clearly American vocals float over waves of feedback and drum machine racket
like a delicate mist sitting just above a mountain lake. Melodies bob and weave
inside an omnipresent static that fills in every nook and cranny of the recording.
Drawing from a quiver of influences such as Black Tambourine, Confuse (JP),
The Count Five, and of course The Shop Assistants (RIP Alex Taylor), Star Party's
debut album seamlessly meshes together noise, melody, and harmony.
